England book their spot in the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals thanks to a dramatic 3-2 win over co-hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.
The Three Lions went into the game as slight underdogs, playing Mexico at a stadium they rarely lose in. Altitude levels also dominated the pre-match buildup, not to mention the kick-off time. Thomas Tuchel had a clear gameplan from the off. England looked to soak up early Mexico pressure and quiet the home crowd.
It worked well and England held out until the first-half hydration break, using that as a key point in the match. England upped their game for the rest of the second half and took a two-goal lead thanks to Jude Bellingham’s brace. He opened the scoring in the 36th minute with a header from Bukayo Saka’s cross, having evaded his marker on the edge of the box. Less than two minutes later, England won the ball high up the pitch and Bellingham produced a one-two with Harry Kane before bundling the ball over the line.
England’s lead lasted just four minutes, though, as Mexico pulled a goal back from a set-piece. Ezri Konsa did not fully connect with his clearance, and Julian Quinones scored thanks to an excellent volley. England’s game got harder within 10 minutes of the restart as Jarell Quansah was sent off after a VAR review for a high challenge.
The Three Lions did restore the two-goal lead from the penalty spot, after Raul Rangel brought down Anthony Gordon. Kane stepped up and beat the goalkeeper, who did go the wrong way. But shortly after, Kane conceded a penalty for a foul in the box, again awarded after a VAR review. Raul Jimenez coolly scored, setting up a nervy finish. England eventually held on for a famous victory.
