Switzerland are through to the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954.
The A-Team have been at each of the past six World Cups, but they had fallen at the last-16 on four occasions. The exception was in 2010 when they bowed out at the group stage. But they’ve already made history.
Switzerland have won three games at a single World Cup for the first time, and two knockout ties. They finished top of their group with two wins from three, against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Canada. Those wins came after Switzerland opened their tournament with a draw against Qatar, conceding a late equaliser.
Finishing top of the group placed Switzerland in the round-of-32 against Algeria, who were one of the best third-placed sides. The A-Team were pretty comfortable in their 2-0 victory. Colombia were up next in the last-16 and an uninspiring game went all the way to penalties. But Switzerland won that, booking a quarter-final spot.

Switzerland’s key players for World Cup 2026
Switzerland top World Cup Golden Boot contender: Johan Manzambi
- Key stat: Johan Manzambi has scored three goals in 200 minutes at the World Cup so far.
Not many expected Johan Manzambi to be top-scoring for Switzerland. That’s largely because he was an unknown quantity to many. But he sits clear of Ruben Vargas and Breel Embolo (both two goals) at the top of the goalscoring charts. Manzambi missed the win over Colombia through injury but was crucial in Switzerland reaching the knockouts. He scored twice in the 4-1 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina, changing the game after coming off the bench, before netting against Canada.
Switzerland primary playmaker: Breel Embolo
- Key stat: Breel Embolo has created eight chances at the World Cup so far.
Ruben Vargas has created nine chances at the World Cup so far, more than any other Switzerland player. But Breel Embolo is only one behind, and has been a key player in their attack. He’s more of a linkup man than an out-and-out striker, which is shown by his eight chances created. Three of those have been big chances, the joint-most of any Switzerland player. Embolo has also chipped in with two assists, with only Johan Mazambi (five) being directly involved in more goals than his four (two goals, two assists).
Switzerland card magnet and top tackler: Ricardo Rodriguez
- Key stat: Ricardo Rodriguez leads Switzerland for both tackles and fouls at the 2026 World Cup.
Ricardo Rodriguez is a World Cup cult hero for many. And he’s been a key player for Switzerland so far at left-back. The 33-year-old is the second-oldest player in Switzerland’s squad but he hasn’t lost a step. He has made nine tackles at the World Cup so far, which is more than any other Switzerland player. But he also leads the A-Team for fouls, committing nine. However, Rodriguez is yet to receive a yellow card.
Switzerland young talent: Johan Manzambi
Johan Manzambi is one of Switzerland’s most promising young talents. The 20-year-old midfielder showed impressive development during qualifying and has played a key role in Switzerland’s midfield during the tournament. His energy and technical ability make him an important player for the future of Swiss football.
STAND-OUT STAT: Switzerland are the only team to ever be knocked out of the World Cup without conceding a goal. They were knocked out on penalties in the last-16 in 2006 after a 0-0 draw with Ukraine.
Switzerland’s set-piece specialists
- Penalties: Granit Xhaka
- Free kicks: Ruben Vargas
- Corners: Ruben Vargas, Fabien Rieder
Switzerland tactical analysis and formation
Switzerland team stats (average per game at World Cup 2026):
- Corners: 5.2
- Shots on target: 5.0
- Shots on target conceded: 3.6
- Offsides: 2.0

Murat Yakin has often deployed a 4-2-3-1 at the World Cup this summer, with Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler in the double pivot. But he has sometimes added another midfielder to their mix, depending on availability and opponents. When in the No.10, Johan Manzambi has thrived, and he’s having a real breakthrough tournament.
The attacking linkup is key, particularly in the role Breel Embolo plays. The team frequently rotates personnel in attacking positions to maintain high energy. Switzerland’s approach combines defensive solidity with creative attacking, making them a consistent and competitive side in international football.

Switzerland manager analysis
Murat Yakin has been in charge of the Switzerland national team since August 2021. The Swiss manager has overseen a period of stability and improvement for the national team. Yakin’s tactical approach emphasizes organization, discipline, and efficiency. He has built a team capable of competing with the world’s elite sides.
Yakin’s management during qualifying was impressive, securing automatic qualification for the World Cup by finishing first in the group. His experience at international level and understanding of Swiss football made him well-equipped to lead the team at the World Cup. And he has done well with Switzerland making it to the quarter-finals.
He has shown flexibility during the tournament by surrendering to Johan Manzambi’s talent, which changed the outlook of the team. Going from the 4-3-3 to a 4-2-3-1 with the Freiburg youngster defending as a second striker and leaning more on fast breaks with him pushing the pace.
| Coach | Team | P | W | D | L | Win % |
